Why do I need this medicine?
Cholera vaccine helps protect travelers to an area where there is a risk of cholera infection.

Cholera is a serious bacterial infection that is acquired from eating or drinking unclean food or water. It causes severe diarrhoea.

This vaccine helps your body make its own antibodies (substances in the body that fight against infection) to protect you against this infection.
How do I take this medicine?
Take Cholera vaccine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take this medicine on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or after a meal.

Cholera vaccine is available as a granule for suspension. It comes with an effervescent granule that serves as a buffer (substance that protects the vaccine from the stomach acid).

To take this medicine, follow these steps:
  1. Pour specified volume of cool, clean, purified or spring bottled water into a clean cup.
  2. Empty effervescent granule into the cup. Stir until it dissolves.
  3. Empty vaccine granules into the cup containing the buffer solution. Stir until a cloudy suspension is formed. It is important that you follow these steps. Do not interchange the order of preparing the solution.
  4. Drink the suspension immediately.
Do not thaw granules. The suspension should be prepared within 15 minutes after taking it out from the freezer or refrigerator.

The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment regimen. Follow and complete the entire course of medicine.

Make sure you know when and how to take this medicine. If you have problems or do not understand the instructions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
If a dose is missed for more than 6 weeks, inform your doctor and pharmacist immediately.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not take this medicine if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to Cholera vaccine.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • stomach problems
  • disease that weakens the immune system e.g. HIV
  • low immunity due to certain medication e.g. medicines for cancer, radiation therapy
  • illness accompanied by fever
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Cholera vaccine to a child.

Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Bacteria may shed in your stool for at least 1 week. For at least 2 weeks after taking this medicine, always wash your hands thoroughly after using the bathroom and before preparing or handling food.
What side effects could I experience?
Cholera vaccine may cause any of the following side effects: tiredness, weakness, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort or pain, loss of appetite, fever, cough, rashes and itching.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any signs and symptoms of an allergic reactions e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes.

Inform the doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I take this with other medicines?
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking chloroquine (a medicine to prevent or treat malaria).

Always notify the doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
How should I store this medicine?
Place granules in its original container and store in a freezer.

Store suspension in a refrigerator. Do not freeze.

Protect from light and moisture.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
